welcome to this new episode of work on and abroad today I am with Alexander he is from Ukrainian Ukraine and he’s going to tell about his story how he got to Ireland tips about getting a job here and living here in Ireland or any other bit from his cultural background if you got any questions please let us know what’m Alexander how you doing thank you I’m fine so maybe we can start by telling us a little bit about yourself alright I’m 36 year old my main language is Russia I come from the eastern Ukraine I’m here in Ireland since 2015 and my occupation is a computer programmer so engineer in a big company so what’s your motivation about being abroad when this idea of living abroad came to your mind for a few years I worked as a freelancer programmer and amongst freelancer programmers the idea of living abroad was quite widespread but usually people considered going something like Thailand or something like that to live in a Volm country when you live in northern country ok go into somewhere whereas the warm sea is cheap nothing is very attractive but I never actually went I got family I got children I’m happy about that but it took all the time and resources and we just started to settle in the city we lived in so you finish University and you were just working back at home and I worked back at home I grew professionally I worked as a freelancer or in some companies and I grew and grew and grew and grew and eventually very unexpectedly Ukraine became someplace you don’t want to raise children and and in 2015 I found the opportunity to go to Ireland okay so basically in 2014 I started to consider different alternatives mainly go to Russia but some recruiter from Island called to my mobile in a very unexpected way they say here from the blue sky it means life you didn’t expect it yeah do anything to do that actually I did something basically I uploaded my eraser man to sight monster okay it’s not a advertisement I don’t use that site actually and I did that I don’t really remember my bid to maybe 2004 in 2007 yeah when I was much younger and I didn’t actually expect anything and that guy called me actually when my experience according to that man reached 10 years of let’s say program in Python yeah probably that was a trigger probably he just searched the site for programmers with experience equal or greater than ten years and he got me she got my mobile number and she called me and I was addressing my daughter in the kindergarten and I started speaking English in mobile and other parents were look and let me started to look at me in a really strange way and I started to work with this guy he was not a recruiter for for us working for a certain company he just had a few clients who tried to hire some Python programmers and there was the very few interviews I took in different companies and eventually I joined the first company which agreed to pull me out okay so how your wife took the idea about working with another company abroad or coming abroad so how do you how do you manage this change for a new your family mmm my wife is a very good wife so actually I discussed this idea of moving somewhere else a few times secure even before I decided to go and their show is what’s what they supported me in this like she said wherever you go I go with you just to make sure you she’s a quadrangle that yeah yeah just choose a good one and Ireland was particularly suited for her because she is actually an English fellow gist and she has much better English levels on me okay nice for her yeah she actually teach English teachers back in Ukraine oh nice yeah so here she feels much better than I myself yep she feel much more confident and it’s interesting for her as well because you know they have they have studied English speaking countries culture like England you say Ireland back there in the Universities so she basically came to one of those countries and had a opportunity to look at the culture from don’t take the closer look at the country I’ll say so specially when you’re going to do this change in your life because you you have to work back there and you got your family kids at school and then you were thinking about moving here then you start to talk to companies and then you might get a job offer so what advice Oh could you tell to the people that maybe at the same position at the moment when they are trying to move and they get a job offer when you get the job offer cap kind of like yes this this is happening to me so I need to decide on out if the money is right or not and it’s decide if I move in with my family and then I need to prepared so what advice could you provide to those people from my personal experience it may be different from your personal experience eventually from my personal experience you’re the first offer you receive maybe not the best offer you can get on the market I myself jump into first offer but it was my personal case and maybe it was a mistake I know that other people more time looking for offers and the venture is a good better offers better in financial sense better in the sense of company environment they worked in just for reference the company I work now it’s not the same company I worked when I just came to Ireland so I changed my job after one year okay changing job here in Ireland is not something fantastic but if you come from a country where you require work visa to go to Ireland and be prepared you cannot change your job at all during the first year maybe they already talked to someone who explains the mechanism maybe I should not go into the tales now no no no needed to display the details by the way but it is fair enough to say like yeah you need to stay with your alright your company the first year and then you can do so you stay for first years and you can do the change so it is important to know if you’re getting the job offer is important to you say like maybe you didn’t negotiate but it would be a good idea to do emotional okay first I’d first seem to do is to try to negotiate better this company who makes an offer as I learned here sometimes people even negotiate about compensation amount your salary is actually a bit negotiable I didn’t realize that when is it is it okay in Ukraine to negotiate your salary you didn’t do it because they were kind of sponsor to you in the visa so you were like this is a whole package is the visa plus the compensation I really want the visa yes I felt like you know not it not not that I owe them but and get me something else I’m getting something else for money yeah so first you can actually negotiate about the compensation and second actually it is widespread amongst good companies here to provide you with allocation package ad allocation package is basically help from some specialized agencies help with lost help with transportation of your belongings your things yep from your country to Ireland did you get that no okay um some money may be paid to some tickets yeah our tickets yeah yeah yeah so all this actually can appear if you go to work for a good company if this part is missing and you’re frozen you should reconsider and maybe the company you join it’s not the best company you can get here there are some companies here in Ireland which make profit from a little bit on the pain to the workforce coming out of the border is they basically use this restriction of the first year and they have stream of developers coming through that companies basically people sit there for one year or two years and then just go work to to other countries so probably is there are no relocation package it is one of those companies plus things can rapidly change here for example in 2015 when I just was coming here it was the year when rent prices as a price to rent a flat here in Dublin it started to grow significantly and the amount you know from say friends or your relatives already broke here that amount maybe not really relevant so when you get your compensation in the offer try to inform that amount with I the people who live there and Dublin and try to figure out what what that amount will give you so after you will pay the rent after you will pay the tax tax amount depends on your family structure for example would would what is there for you and what you can get for that money here in Dublin so it may be a question for you to consider that’s very important because we have said this in other episodes when we are talking with people from other countries that we get on a job a job offer we seek compensation and we see like wow this is a lot of money and then when you come you realize okay well happen maybe half of my salary is going into taxes and then rent and then insurance and then just provided life to your family or to yourself and we’re going to get to the point that maybe you are staying with less money that you now are having at back at home because you didn’t consider this Dede cheb like how life is being taken here yeah for programmers from Ukraine from Russia as far as I know from conversation experience here this is the thing basically after the tax which is effectively maybe from 37 to 40 percent here and after the rent will take half of would what’s left of that after the tax you can easily end up with I don’t know maybe a couple thousands of euros just and it’s it can be easily half of would someone with your experience get in I know you know in other countries and in other countries you know there are different taxes or sometimes you can avoid paying taxes I mean not avoid paying taxes but pay like 6% geoducks for example for you when you are doing business here in Ireland or just working in an Irish American company office culture it is too different from what you were used to in Ukraine I worked in a few companies in Ukraine and if you work in the company with American roots the culture is basically the same okay if you work for a company these I don’t know the local Indian local Ukrainian or Israeli roots then the culture can be different I am in local so if you work for a big offshore onshore procurement company then good chances that the culture will be basically the same maybe less political even in place I’m not sure maybe it’s just my personal situation okay and when you are communicating with people here in Ireland do you find yourself be more direct there you are or you are you are less direct they are how do you feel that have you change or adjust your wire talking or expressing yourself here mmm it is hard to say people are different but I know that some people from my from my circle here from russian-speaking circle they claims that Irish are more evasive so they are less direct when you speak about but honestly I found maybe a couple of people here in Ireland who managed to speak about something meaningful and direct with me so I don’t know how how to translate that fact yeah does it mean maybe I’m not a person of a good enough character speaking of Polly at least language here to speak to maybe I’m not interesting enough maybe my English is not interesting enough or maybe that people basically had a bad mood yeah but there are a good chances that you will start interested in fair conversation with someone in the street then with someone in company environment maybe people in company environment they you know consider themselves to be in more official environment but honestly I managed to start a new session about whether with some granny in a railway station and maybe she was bored but we had an interesting conversation and it’s not something I personally get here in the company so in two words people don’t speak to me Alex if someone is back in Ukraine or a country around the current with the similarities in culture and they are looking to do interviews here in Ireland to get a job will you could you provide an advice today yeah sure what can i buy screw you provide them prepare seriously I know that in our culture it’s widespread good tradition to postpone everything to the last moment just spreads start a lot more or less evenly and just honestly prepare just imagine you will introduce people chances are you interviewed someone so interviews here in Irish companies they they are not I mean technical interviews they are no different from technical interviews back in Ukraine or Russia so it’s more or less the same and very good chances that if you interview to a good companies there will be sound people who will not you know exercise their ego and they will actually do the technical interviews and probably they will be obviously there will be a stage with a management or HR and Samson so just keep your personal brightness average level closer to minimum and just fairly answer your questions just I myself when when I was asked something like why do you switch from your current company our company I honestly said it’s money and well after that there was an inconvenient pause like what did you just say there is I simply started to explain that I get this and this and this money is basically don’t cover my expenses and I spend my savings yep so I need to get out from the situation and your company looks good and they decide is it it’s a good place to spend a few more years and I don’t want to jump for the company company yeah it was it all was fine just don’t try to hide your reasons just yeah the secret agenda yeah yeah just openly reason about and it’ll be fine if you find let’s say you you go you can go back in time and then in ten years you can go back ten years and go to an extended back ten years so what advice cream provide act act quickly actually act I mean don’t don’t wait don’t consider too much be even more proactive so about your life or be a professional career what what sense both life and permission yeah and just professionally I tend to build long lists of things to do and learn and they grow to 300 died since then I just drop it and start building new lists yeah so just just do it here and any lots of advice for the people that are listening to the show that they might be thinking about going and work abroad or or just having an experience in and in a country where they their language is not the principal language as you know that here that is English for a country I mean you probably come from it yeah okay just prepare a little bit and prepare I mean money sense in find some contacts here it’s very good if you have someone to talk to like when I came in I was literally alone I didn’t know anyone here and just stay calm in this stay calm about your language level it is something you can always increase you can use language you can make language better but for communication for communication it is very important to actually communicate and communication consists not only from the language but from nonverbal part as well so people will try to talk to you here in Ireland at least in Dublin it is not something uncommon for them to meet a stranger in the street who is with is not knowing what to do where to go and not really ready to explain what is going on like I even brought my father and mother at some point and after a few visits here they started to actually communicate in the streets with the locals so I guess it’s an important yeah and it means that locals are actually supportive so don’t use your thoughts about you know resistance local environment as a base of not going here it’s not something which really exists thank you so much if there if the people want to get in contact with you is is there a way to do it yes no problem I’ll leave my what is the email oh it’s complicated yeah well I can put it in DINO yeah just put it on the nose okay and in my case is Leonardo da Martin at PN dot and thank you so much Alexander San Giulio thank you to all keep the change we are going to have more professionals and see you next time bye
