welcome to this new episode of work and learn abroad today we are going to be talking with Sonya she is specialized in the human resources and she will share his/her story and – well welcome are you doing here hi Leo I everybody I’m doing great it’s Friday so so yes we all got finished with the day yes and the week and the week yeah it’s been a long week very long so maybe if you can tell a little bit about yourself ok so I was born and raised in Italy in the north of Italy from 3 No and I guess my family background is really a bit mixed because they were not all from the north of Italy they were mostly from the south of Italy and my father family traveled to Argentina back in time so yeah they were living there almost 20 years and he was born there actually as my aunt and from the other side of the family they were coming from Greece from Turkey so I guess like my family background is already been just like travelers yeah in that space so yes so I I pretty much spent 25 years of my life in Italy but I start like watching the abroad work world a bit earlier what yeah I wrote so very funny because everything came up very casually so whenever I was out in school like 1618 and people were like how do you want to go and do these like trip abroad like no no interests thanks I’m good where I am or do you want to go to study holidays or anything else in English or in French well I was like no no I’m good what I am I to do this kind of thing and then I don’t know what happened I guess like after one one very big holidays with friends we were 12 people I was like oh my god I just mean that all day by myself and they want to go by myself in a place only for myself and I was thinking of options I’ve always been like very willing to visit Ireland okay but no one wanted to come with me training or whatever it was excused there right yeah so I was like okay what is the easiest way to do a holiday by myself being challenged and enjoy Ireland as it would like not being by myself all the time because it’s not gonna be fun but at least they can challenge myself and I guess they’re like I sign up for two weeks English course okay very surprisingly I was like look at least I can visit Ireland I can make some friends and not gonna be by myself and I’m also gonna be busy doing something and that pretty much changed the way of seeing things so since that’s holidays because I’ve seen how cool was chatting with people making new friends like putting yourself in the challenging space but also like trying to get out with something and I remember when I first arrived I couldn’t understand the taxi driver from the earth to here like terrified play at the end was a great experience so Ireland since then has always been in my head but I was doing University so I had to go back okay so you finished and then you went back the end instead in your mind yeah I was like just back from these holiday and I kept going to my University it was a very long university part because it’s the law degree yeah and I was at the third year so I I went to university I did another year and then I was like for the summer I can go back and I can do the two or three months summer holidays yeah instead of going and enjoy the Sun places I go there and you know find barbarous job or anything just to pick up the language and to get again that was bothering that reality yeah so and that’s what I did for the next year but he didn’t really go the way I was planning but that’s another story okay you got here I got here again yeah yeah okay so you got here stuff happened and did you finish it here and then went back so what happened there is that I flew here before just for some Patrick because now like Ireland was in my mind so I just took a friend it was like let’s go for some pottery because some Patrick is in March just in case yeah and I was like let’s go for some pottery just to enjoy a weekend and to see you know the green everywhere and when I went there and it was only more I’d she was like I may start already sending some CV I was like at least you know in Italian restaurants when I can help myself with the language but still being able to learn English and improving in my English level and then and my mom was like what are you doing yes my she’s way too every nobody’s gonna consider you don’t do that it looked like look no I’m if I send it and they don’t call me fine and I will try again for the summertime well is that someone actually wanted to meet me for an introduction interview and it happened that that someone was the the HR for a company of Italian restaurants okay okay so when he matched me he was like looking summertime we always needs people additional people so if you know how to make coffee and that was completely lying I was like of course I know how to make coffee I’m a great coffee maker not a clue and I think he picked up on that but on top of that tea you look at my CV and so that I was like studying law and employment law it was like why didn’t you do an internship in HR it was like oh no no hope my English is terrible not at all at this point everything was done in Italian with the this guy and your English was fine but no no you were sure about getting a job in English well my English my view was terrible and probably was not only my view so I wasn’t feeling any any sure of getting this job and my university was not over but was planning for the summer time yeah so I was like okay I’ll let me think about I’m I think I’m gonna take the coffee the coffee maker job and then at the end I was like okay I give it a try it’s gonna be a sacrifice because it’s not gonna be paid but at least he can give me some some exposure and if he’s raised that I can do it with my English is right yeah yes yeah otherwise I’ve been honest and the English sure I didn’t feel that comfortable with my English and so yeah and then I then started the internship for that summer and with two months English internship so not that long okay so how how do you feel before during the internship when you were you feeling yeah now this is a long trip you want to do business and you have to say bye to your family forum for a couple of months yes so how do you feel there did you feel like the action I’m just going and be back in a couple of months then say bye to family oh yeah it was more like having an experience so I didn’t feel I was leaving the country because in fairness I had to go back to finish my university so it was like taking it a step by step and it was like okay I’ll go and explore and see how it goes it’s gonna be an experience worse scenario we improve my English nothing can happen really long long holidays working holidays and America yeah and for the English side I was terrified I was terrified but I was also thinking like I’ve been honest and they were actually I was saying no because they didn’t become in my English because someone actually says you can do it I’m like if they say that’s like Who am I it’s you know to remove this opportunity for myself I mean in the case of family and friends how they react to this for that situation I think the reaction was okay because they knew I would have gone back but they have started seeing a trend where I was very like excited and you know super active with this experience so and of course it does experience are going wild and they can see already that probably your future is gonna be somewhere near yes so no but was right because he felt like because I was going for two months he felt like I was going back so people were just right I won’t see you for two months but on your back and the company did they did they handle the lodgement did they get apartment for you nothing so you have to be started to do these bits so was unpaid was no apartment no nothing very little embarrassment so I was pretty much working all year while studying you should get this money to get this money okay to get ready yeah I wasn’t an investment pretty much for myself and before going coming here at the time I was like looking at adverts or after whatever was that situation okay and I would have probably look for the short term you know rent space there was someone was going away for the only days time and they it was so bright in the room but sharing of course with someone on so that’s fast for fast forward and then you do the internship you’re finished and then you eat time to go back or some Thursday no it’s time to go back but they offered me a job with a part-time job but then in the other hands I was having like my university parts and like interrupting it like that will make sense yes even though I know was difficult in Italy to find a job but it was like you know what I’ll finish it and then I go back when I finish it so I was still live in two years sad so I say to them look I can come next year again in the summer time but I can’t move here right now yeah so I did the same and the gained the year after it was another internship of two months side so people same people same company still same condition but for me was more like getting familiar with the place and giving myself that by start like pairs of what that would have been and it was Alban the fact that you were having a time back time to go back and not initially just like like a John okay so and then I came back and then I got graduated after of course the end of it and yeah okay so this is finished right it is finish all this part is done and you were still thinking about coming to Ireland how was it process the mental process that you were so after the last time I came here for an internship my mind was already I just need to get graduated to being able to go to Ireland I was ready here like with my mind okay this is just like you know a step that I need to finish here but then afterwards and I got to Ireland are gonna go to somewhere else I want to get that experience abroad so I try to get in touch with this company because it was having the contact there and they say it’s look we didn’t had anything as HR okay I’m finished okay and they say and they say look we may have something as administrator but only part-time okay and I I taught a lot and I did some other interview in Italy like nothing was satisfying exactly so in Italy at the time after graduation you wouldn’t have got a job anyway it wasn’t internship it was on page long hours now you will be doing through this so you have your down we yeah that would give my my labor for free exactly and I was like you know what in Italy the other option is to give him my labor for free with no opportunities in Ireland I may still give my labor for free but at least I learn a language I learned something else if I got you know did you get it I’m getting something yeah yeah to discover a different reality a different culture is an experience it’s something is gonna be my like it’s way more important than any other experience yeah so I was like you know what I got the part-time job administrator my parents are like you’re graduating in low and you’re getting I’m not gonna straight a part-time job in Ireland you don’t even know how to come for you know with with expenses and everything else and it was like I find a way find a way what scenario we’ll do two different jobs I will do the part-time job and I barista whatever is gonna look like but I will find a way because this is what I want to do and worse scenario if things are not really gonna work and you know I can always go back I mean they’re always go back home is what actually kept me kind of yeah I can do it right oh yeah you’re back I bought the tickets I bought the tickets yesterday actually even before discussing my tie Jesus okay of degree I was already adding my luggage ready so everything was fine you were yes that they’re here then you came so usually you get and you do this kind of changes at some point you you you go like oh I’m here yeah so when this happened to you it happen I think after three months four months okay because tournament so it wasn’t completely new place because they’ve been here like Texas the water already but when you move completely and you don’t have any flight back and usually after the two months I would have a flight back and that was already three for months and you know you start having all the challenges or feeling tired because speaking and working on different language is tiring so I was feeling like double the time tired of the evening I was on my own yeah you have flatmates but not every night doing party and stuff like that yeah you need to release your steam use your own language your own thing and Plus that well you get bills and then you start to well you’re living in the country yeah yeah and what triggered that and what how do you react to them I think that that feeling was triggered by the fact that I felt that I felt sometimes stupid at work like things that you could have done quite easily in your own language you feel such a difficult experience yeah I mean even when the phone was ringing my panic level top was like oh my god what can I say I don’t know if I will because my problem was understanding I may know what to say but what if I don’t understand the person they ask repeat repeat you know all this panic moment and and yeah and that was the time piece you feel you feel that in your own language will be is my heart and you do the job better and you’re overcomplicating your life and you’re missing your family your sub missing your friends you make new friends but it’s different right and so so yeah then the situation pretty much how do you react like you you say like okay I’m done I’m done now I’m done here I can be going back or do you say no I like oh this is just how do you cope yeah I remember there was a moment where I was like okay I’ll apply for a job in Italy you know what we throw away when the first yeah I was like let’s apply yeah like my crisis moment I apply this it’s just like the sense of reality changers and then and then of course you didn’t get response because Italy market is difficult because the incident that easy as people like to describe and I was like I can do it I can do it I just need to be stronger on these because I kept doing a job that was not what I study for what I liked and what I so yeah I was like okay I can keep doing it I’ll give myself two three four months more and then I decide afterwards so it was always like it’s nice because yeah give yourself a time him whenever you’re gonna gonna go in a crisis not just not make a decision but give yourself like two three four months and says if after that time I still feel like that I may need to start considering but he’s normal did that you may feel a bit in a crisis sometimes because this life changing right about that part there was was there cultural shock for you here I think this is very funny I am experiencing more the effects of cultural shock right now that I’m here after five years the not back at the time because back in the time like I was very I was loving it I was loved afar the people were so friendly the people were so well educated swell sensitive about everything so being very greeting so I I didn’t have a cultural shock problem and also like people around me we’re probably not all Irish so I surround myself probably more in the Latin okay like Italian Spanish Portuguese Brazilian Argentinian like II what it was that space so no I wouldn’t say it was a culture shock I’ve actually very much embraced the fact that I could have friends from all over the world and it was so interesting to learn about everybody and now I was and related to business mm-hm business-wise yeah do you find a difference between me and how business are down here in Ireland so this is an interesting question because to be completely honest I have never worked after my graduation in Italy so I cannot really make a good calibration apple with Apple what I can see is when I had to interact because during my work in Ireland you interact with it Italian entity or Spanish entity or Latino entities you see a different big difference in cultural you know everything else and this is what always kept me away from thinking of going back ok yeah so we are getting you through to a great working culture here and then is difficult when when you get to other situation where probably before you were way more used to and now is like what are they doing this like what if they all take their you know in this kind of situation but yeah sometimes I remember when I went to Japan and then see this stuff works so I remember that I went to the temple and claimed that I was being overcharged by the insurance company that was a government right and they would say ok yes your your claim is they gave me a response right away they’re like yeah your claim is right and then the next day I got a notification saying like in coming next week I mean we are going to keep you back your money and I said and I was so surprised because I did all the claiming just another friend told me like oh actually you’re paying mortar you’re expected to pay go on time why and if I do these in another country or my home country I will be expecting and still that there are several years some response about my claiming so when you start to see the things working in another place and then you when you go back to your old ways isn’t your honor but he works there why can’t we not to be doing the same yeah why hey take so much yes and I think it for my especially my area like the murders if I was working in Italy my job would have been way more difficult because the Italian entities were way more confrontational and start from the point of someone is is pretty much trying to give me a trap and that’s what what is behind what is he done is the same for us right yeah so you always come a lot so what why are you are yeah you always start from a defense point yes while in here the culture is different so even like in a job that could be challenging like human resource people will always start from the point not an accusation point while these not be the experience even with some the experience is Italian or orders so I guess this is also but this is a cycle pretty much so whatever you guess then your approach is gonna be in the same direction so what advice could you provide to the people that’s there are people who around the world we are lucky we see this statistics I was talking before the show that people have listens to us in every word so if someone is right now they’re thinking about going abroad and dinner still can speak the language good enough for TE for another country where my native language is not there yeah at that level but could be a good advice for them why lighting the first thing exactly of their doing is get information and the country you want to go and get experience from people that’s already done that step and try to understand what it is important what is now trying to test the water trying to certain city over see if you got any response or if you get in conversation or if it feels like very scary I’m not like I wouldn’t say to everybody like just jump in it because sometimes is scary right and if you feel that scary why don’t you just do a trial or you know can be a long holiday or it can be okay I’ll take a sabbatical from my job or I’ll take two months and I go and try it and they have my return ticket and if the things are going well then the return ticket is good and just be visiting my family and friends and I will ever return back right so sometimes if your rights and you have all the insurance you you want to ask job accommodation or anything else but if you feel that you don’t want to do that massive step just yet no problem just do it smaller and then build it up from there and see if you actually you like it but just whenever you are there and you pass the three four months mark and you start feeling a bit nostalgic and when Connie kind of this feeling and do you feel like giving up just like try to keep yourself all together and say it’s okay let’s put another you know next point and if I at that point we still feel as I am like try to react try to still go further there great well thank you so much for being with us thank you and thank you to you too for joining us and Disney show please remember that we are in Knighton’s Spotify tune in also you can reach the block that is broken and abroad phu kham and thank you so much thank you
