welcome to this new episode of working on an abroad today we have over who is going to talk about his experience related to how to be work what is to be working abroad and he’s generally from the engineering field and now he’s a deployment analyst and he’s going to talk about what he saw he got the two here to Ireland and how has being with the kids experience so howhow are you doing oh I’m very good thank you how are you fine fine thank you so maybe you kind of start to talk about yourself a little bit yeah so I’m 34 years old I yeah like you said I’m coming from the engineering field I studied mechanical engineering Germany I came to Dublin in end of 2013 the first time I am worked here for a year which was a bit unsatisfying professionally so I got an offer from Germany for a better job I moved back there for about two years and and what was the first thing idea about coming to Ireland I mean that okay in that case was it for you just working do you want to do you want to better English it was just nice well yeah were not different different reasons so I finished my studies in Germany I didn’t really find the work or the job I was looking for like I got a lot of rejections on my own applications and I wanted to go abroad like since I like thing of it was a child I always wanted to go to us I applied for the food ISA for the US I tried to get a job there and didn’t really work and then I was looking in Europe and then there was just a point where I just say it I’m gonna take the chance now who knows when I would get it over to you again okay I didn’t have a job so I I just came to Ireland I tried it okay you got a job there and then you know a year passed and you started to see how things just started to work and I learned yeah I thought this so I applied to a job from Germany so I came here for four actually for the job interview I didn’t get a job so I was here without a job not going really what to do and I kept applying here I found a job in a publisher in the city center I really liked the job but I coming from like an engineering background wasn’t really what I want to do for for longer so I got a dollar from Gerald and he went back so you went back to Germany and how long did you stay there for two years and after two years together Gandy yeah exactly I think if you’ve worked and lived abroad for a while you you have to bucked it yeah you just yeah you want to see more you wanna see something else and I really missed Dublin a lot a lot of friends here but I missed and the city where I wasn’t German was small and it was boring a bit so I said besides your professional growth were you thinking about being in a bigger market and be and having a job that could be more aligned what would you started before how did the second time feeling came into being okay I’m actually going again because I do believe this yeah so it was not a professional decision at all I did that engineering job in Germany I at some point I felt that it’s not really what I want to do so in the end I fulfilled that the engineering future and I don’t need to do that to be happy we need to be an engineer so I quit that job and I went to Ireland again without having anything we all having a job I slept at a friend’s place for 4 for the first month and then I found a job to work abroad but actually I’ve been in this job too long I got some experience feel like doing any more peridot experience that I got so maybe I should go and do it more just to – so the people might be feeling tight right so yeah – keep following though in your case you have switched from market to earn from – from one field to another so why not what advice could you provide yeah no your skills know what you’re good in and try to use the experience that you already have in another field like you can always transfer knowledge and transfer skills into another field and try to find out what you do what you want to do what do you like to do what did it what didn’t work for you here in Ireland when you were trying to do this well you try to connect the people what did you try how do you approach this feeling yeah so I had to jump in a vow doing that in a call centre type of job and I kept applying to jobs until I found their job and yeah I was lucky to find that really really good job hear that that’s only I mean that’s all it you can do just keep applying use your connections you have I think that’s really important if you know people you already try to get job interviews we are those people you know now we usually other podcasts will have said about importance to connect with people good to network meetups and join groups and stuff like that your kids how do you do it like you’re just jumping to some friends and gain some those friends connect to do friends or do you join some so when I tended to the government first into and 13 I went to meetups and I went to the college surfing meetings and that’s where I met all my friends I have now but like there one really any professional outcome from that and for the second time you already knew the people yeah I thought you already knew the people a lot of people left already as well but about 50% of the people I knew over or still here and I got a few job interviews from from people I know here working in their companies in the end I had the choice to or rather the selection between several jobs and then I yeah exactly was easier than I expected and thinking how culture works do you have any culture shock when you came the first sort of the second time do you feel some kind of difference between Germany and Ireland like how you were going to approach things well the second time not because I knew how it works and the first time 15 just landed here yeah the first bit I think it’s important to keep in mind that Ireland is much more relaxed in Germany things take more time you don’t need to be I kind of present on time for an appointment for some just take it easy you don’t need to show up in a suit for for job interview for example depends on the job Jamie you yes you have to it’s a it’s important to do some research related what’s the the yeah the right if you if you go to a country to work there in medium form yourself about the country before yeah what are the customs what how does the CV look like for example like in Germany for example we use pictures on CBS you put the the birth date in there so people know how old you are you don’t do that here for example I knew that before it came but that’s probably something you should inform yourself about and how do you feel with the language first of the second time as well do you feel any kind of barrier with the language or you were you okay I I was okay I studied in the US or semester before I came to Ireland okay so I think my news was good level came here will you recommend to people I’m not sure how the German system education system works so will you recommend people to do some again like some kind of English classes before coming here or just would be fine it depends I mean how your English is if it’s enough to get a job interviews to do with job interviews to talk to people then I think it’s in enough because you improve a lot here I think you always improve in the country you you’re staying in you get the language and if not and yeah doing of course at home yeah and related to that moment before leaving the country for the first time to enjoyed how do you feel do you feel some kind inside because many people will be there thinking oh well actually I’m concerned and I’m good I’ve seen the market I’ve seen the companies seems nice and then you buy the tickets that day before buying tickets is kind of crucial right maybe the day before or I launder they are on the plane or maybe yours when your land so is there any advice that you could provide the people who listen to the podcast I think it’s it’s important to to be excited and will stay excited in the beginning at least like you need to persist be persistent and you need resilience just that there will be rejections and there will be problems in the beginning and just fight through that when I came here to 113 and I already thought I would get a job but when I interview a 10-4 and then I didn’t and then there was that point when I had no idea what to do now should I stay here should I take all my my suitcase and fly back yeah that’s fine to fly yeah exactly and I I felt so alone my life because I knew I didn’t know anyone in that city I was in the hospital with with all my suitcase and then it was that decisive moment where I said I I’m gonna fight through that and I’m gonna stay here and I keep looking for for a few more weeks and then it all back yeah and that’s right because we sometimes feel like oh we are actually going to die if that doesn’t work yeah doesn’t work you just tried something else because exactly this is maybe not for you maybe this is for you but this you’re not ready for this yet or you just stick to this and say no actually I believe in these I’m want to stick to it exactly and it’s not a failure if it doesn’t work out and you you have to go back at least you had the courage to do it and you took the risk and then there might be people at home who look look down on you it like he’s coming back now he’s he failed but it’s not like that you – took the risk and you’re in that term you’re better than those people who who stayed you know own little world at home if you will have to do something different now that you’re being so the second time it’s say years two years if you go back and talk about talk to the oval in the past five years ago but will you say to that over and then advise him I would yeah I would say just do it believe in yourself well what I didn’t know a tennis that how easy is it actually is for Germans to find a job here even if it’s not the best job ever but you can even can climb the ladder and you can find better jobs but like compared to the Spanish people are in French people it’s so much easier to find a job and I didn’t know that back then if I had known it back then I wouldn’t have so many doubts and I am yeah I would have just like embraced opportunity and would you if if you are now in these lon you know I company the here in Ireland and you’ve seen how business work for four different companies because you being here at least three companies so far that you and I can tell actually and what could be an advice for for the people for the podcast to in the way of doing business here you know that some questions it’s not so much different to let’s say to me do you feel that it’s all more open to the people to speak up and say because I remember like in Japan you usually don’t people don’t go to a meeting and they expect to be something fixed in the meeting you know everybody knows but nobody knows and then sometimes the in Costa Rica we are not that direct say these cultures we teach culture sometimes it’s kind of you go in direct direct way to say stop that’s a good point actually yeah hi children culture is way more direct okay we would say things way more clearer and more promoter right here you try to wrap it in yeah nobody will be hard feelings you have to learn this way oh yeah expressing yourself interacting in both ways so if I say something I need to wrap it around and in Nice of words yeah and as well as if someone says me it tells me something I need to get a message rating message out of it if they say here and you want to do that how about that you wouldn’t do that in Germany like my chest says do exactly you my manage in general would say do that when you have time do that here would say how about what you like to do that yeah it’s not you don’t have an option yes you have to do it it’s just not related to taking apart the professional way of the like your profession and working here in Ireland if you go now to the daily life what advice could you do for people about housing or insurance how do you come back and they approach I’m not sure about how the housing market German German sorry so so what advice could you say to the people of all housing finding a place believe here yeah that’s difficult just a bit of my jobs writers write a lot of applications try to sell yourself in those applications tell them what you do how old you are did your quiet but that’s what people hear and like if you’re looking to move into with someone else as a roommate which is probably the only way to live here mate yeah try to sell yourself people don’t like it if you if you like to party and if you’re if you’re loud and all that say that you’re quiet understand are sure about again do you feel here you get kind of what you could get in Germany or when you get more modern environment yeah the houses are for okay for your standards yeah insulate that the heating doesn’t work sometimes I where there was so much mold and the heating didn’t work things like that people listed five Brazilians in a super small apartment I was the only one that had his own room so it was different you need to adjust it sucker your expectations thank ya a lot yeah and Valera to to a job offer do you see any difference about job offers here in Ireland that you see in Germany because usually we also hear about stock like shares or stock or you know sometimes that you get more days but you could be getting back in Germany how many days we will get off here well my law is 21 oh and some companies take it to 37 the 13 whatever law and you get insurance those kind of perfect benefits because sometimes when we just see an offer we just see oh this is going to be no any salary and you are there that’s and then they start to add stuff and you’re okay well this is too much now maybe it’s not too much because they because the the prices are higher housing is higher clock so it’s important not to get just delighted by all I see these marching numbers what I’m going to do one mistake I did when I applied for jobs the first time in here in Ireland was so they took the gross salary here is lower than for comparable jobs in Germany because the taxes here are lower so you get more out then for the same amount as in Germany okay because the Texas here are lower than in Germany so well I just asked for way too much in the beginning you were fixed that number in taxes I exactly and then everyone’s like we kind of pay that it’s just yeah too high for that kind of job and then it took me a while to more to realize that I know the benefits pto rather do you have that it always usually higher than here okay and [Music] you don’t really get shares I’ve never I never worked for company and during the way it made a good share the earth I had been yet like insurance you have health insurance in Germany anyway like a state state it’s mandatory basically but you you don’t usually get a life insurance for example okay so now commuting time what would you say to people live there okay well it’s okay better got the job offer then I will get this apartment that it seems to be cheap it’s nice how far is I’m checking Google yeah an hour yes okay and is there any other kind of advice say there people about community R like my my best advice would be to get a bike bicycle and just cycle that’s my opinion my experience that’s the quickest way it’s depending where you live of course but if it’s in the city center it’s usually much quicker than the bus or car or anything and well for the people that are thinking about the back there is a back to to work scheme here at home so people can get some taxes just do it some procedure before to get the bike and pay later well yeah you don’t you don’t pay taxes for the bike yeah yeah exactly so if you can do it do it if if the company isn’t a scheme participation scheme do it yeah yeah because they’ve got a good buy for half price basically yes I’m sure you have any last advice or any advice anything that we have left out I think advice is just just do it take the risk exactly it’s usually worth it like people are more capable of of handing difficult situations than they think they are so don’t overthink and just just do it and and move move to another country and say it’s worth it the spirits that you get so good and these beers have been working also in bigger markets depending on the company you choose better you if you want to come come back to your country one day you improve in English you you get a lot a lot more Skills than yes the culture makes that you could get that no it’s not that you’re learning about Ireland or learning about English culture english-speaking culture or your UCL people from everywhere exactly and then you learn about open your mind to to just do more stuff in different ways yeah great well thank you if there is a way to get in contact with you yeah my email address yes we’ll touch hearts 20 at finit 30 okay thank you and in my case is Leonardo dot Martin at p.m. dot me let us know if you have any questions we can answer we see that the people are getting into the podcast and we were getting some questions as well so we are trying to to refer questions in the bottles about whatever you want to listen keep posted I will have more professionals into our progress Thank You / thank you
